Co-extrusion
This PVC co-extruded foam board combines the outstanding properties of rigid PVC. During production, the main extruder forms the foamed core layer while an auxiliary extruder applies two non-foamed skin layers on either face. The result is a unique, three-layer structure in which the dense skins encapsulate a particularly rigid foam core, delivering excellent nail-holding strength, dimensional stability and surface gloss. Its high hardness and strength also allow direct routing, grooving and bending without additional laminating or reinforcement, greatly simplifying fabrication. The board’s surface feels exceptionally smooth and fine—knife-scratch tests leave no marks—and its overall structure is solid, compact, flat and uniform. Thanks to these characteristics, PVC co-extruded foam board is widely used in advertising displays, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, bus compartment ceilings, and as core or interior lining panels in various box-type assemblies.

FAQs of PVC Foam Board
PVC foam board is made of rigid polyvinyl chloride (PVC) through a co-extrusion process that produces a three-layer structure:
- Foamed core layer: Extruded by the main extruder, this lightweight core provides rigidity and dimensional stability.
- Non-foamed skin layers: Applied simultaneously on both faces by an auxiliary extruder, these dense outer layers deliver high hardness, excellent nail-holding strength and a glossy, scratch-resistant surface.
Together, the unfoamed skins encapsulate a sturdy foam core, resulting in a flat, uniform panel that can be directly routed, grooved or bent without additional lamination or reinforcement.
PVC foam board excels in a variety of interior applications, most notably:
Kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities
• Moisture-resistant, warp-free panels ideal for cabinet doors, shelving and carcasses

1. Materials & Equipment
- Raw Material: Rigid polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) resin, foaming agents, stabilizers, lubricants and additives.
- Equipment:
- Main extruder (for foamable core layer)
- Auxiliary extruder (for non-foamed skin layers)
- Cooling/calibration tank
- Cutting and sizing station
2. Extrusion & Co-Extrusion Setup
- Feeding
- Blend PVC resin with foaming agent and other additives.
- Load the mixture into the hopper of the main extruder.
- Load pure PVC resin (no foaming agent) into the auxiliary extruder.
- Melting & Pressurization
- Both extruders heat and melt their respective compounds to a uniform, viscous state.
- Pressure builds to prepare the melt for co-extrusion.
3. Co-Extrusion Process
- Core Layer Formation
- The main extruder forces the foaming PVC melt through a specially designed die.
- Inside the die or immediately downstream, the foaming agent decomposes, creating a microcellular (foamed) core.
- Skin Layer Application
- Simultaneously, the auxiliary extruder injects two thin, non-foamed PVC “skins” onto the top and bottom surfaces of the foamed core.
- The three-layer melt stream merges in the die to form a single, laminated sheet.
4. Cooling, Calibration & Cutting
- Cooling Tank
- The emerging board passes through a water bath or cooling/calibration unit to solidify and stabilize dimensions.
- Sizing
- Precision rollers or vacuum calibration ensure flatness and exact thickness.
- Cutting
- A guillotine or flying saw slices the board into sheets of the desired length.
5. Key Advantages & Post-Processing
- Non-Foamed Skins: Provide high gloss, excellent nail-holding power and surface hardness.
- Foamed Core: Delivers lightweight rigidity and thermal insulation.
- Post-Processing Capabilities:
- Slotting, grooving and folding can be performed directly on the board without cracking.
- Surface is smooth and blemish-free (finger-scrape test leaves no marks).
Difference from Conventional PVC Foam Board
- Co-Extruded PVC Foam Board: Requires two extruders to produce a three-layer structure—higher cost but superior surface finish and mechanical performance.
- Conventional PVC Foam Board: Uses a single extruder, producing a fully foamed sheet with the same outer hardness but lower surface quality and nail-holding strength.
PVC foam board’s strength is primarily governed by its density and internal cellular structure. Higher density yields greater hardness and load-bearing capacity.
Density & Hardness
- Typical density range for co-extruded PVC foam board: 700–800 kg/m³
- At this density, the material’s surface hardness and core rigidity are significantly enhanced compared to lower-density boards.
Compressive Strength
- Increased density translates into superior compressive performance.
- Co-extruded PVC foam board at 700–800 kg/m³ can achieve compressive strengths on the order of 5–12 MPa, allowing it to withstand substantial loads without permanent deformation.
Load-Bearing Capacity
- Such boards can support hundreds of kilograms per square meter of static load (exact value depends on panel thickness and support conditions).
- Ideal for applications requiring flat, stable panels under weight—e.g., shelving, signage, lightweight structural elements.
Mechanical Stability
- High-density, non-foamed skins resist indentation and maintain flatness under pressure.
- Excellent dimensional stability over temperature and humidity cycles ensures the board won’t buckle or sag.
Conclusion:
With a density of 700–800 kg/m³, co-extruded PVC foam board delivers robust compressive strength and load-bearing performance, making it a durable choice for both decorative and structural uses where high hardness and stability are required.
PVC foam board offers moderate heat resistance, but its performance depends on temperature, exposure time, and specific formulation (e.g., co-extruded vs. single-extruded). Below is an overview of its thermal behavior:
Continuous Service Temperature
- Typical continuous use up to 60–65 °C without noticeable softening.
- Some specialized high-performance grades can tolerate 70–75 °C continuously.
Short-Term Heat Exposure
- Brief contact with temperatures up to 80–85 °C is generally safe, but prolonged exposure may lead to surface deformation, warping or dimensional instability.
- Avoid direct contact with heat sources exceeding 90 °C, as PVC’s glass transition temperature (~80 °C) is surpassed, causing softening.
Thermal Expansion & Dimensional Stability
- Coefficient of thermal expansion: approximately 60–80×10⁻⁶ m/m·K.
- In long panels or façades, allowance for expansion gaps (2–3 mm per meter) is recommended to prevent buckling.
Fire & Heat Aging
- PVC is self-extinguishing (V-0 rating under UL94) but will degrade and release HCl gas at elevated temperatures (>100 °C).
- UV-stabilized and fire-retardant additives can improve performance in demanding environments.
Best Practices
- Keep away from direct sun-facing metal surfaces (e.g., rooftops) without insulation—temperatures can exceed safe limits.
- Use under-panel ventilation or backing materials when installed near heat-generating equipment.
- For applications above 65 °C, consider alternative high-temperature plastics (e.g., phenolic or polycarbonate sheets).
Conclusion:
PVC foam board is suitably heat resistant for most interior and lightly exposed exterior applications up to 60–65 °C continuously. For higher temperature or heavy-duty thermal environments, design allowances or alternate materials should be considered.
PVC foam board is inherently highly water-resistant thanks to its material properties and closed-cell structure. Below are the key factors that make it effectively waterproof:
Closed-Cell Core Structure
- The foamed PVC core consists of sealed microcells that prevent water absorption.
- Water ingress into the interior is essentially zero (water absorption rates often <0.1% after 24 hours immersion).
Non-Foamed Skin Layers
- Co-extruded variants feature thin, non-foamed PVC “skins” on both faces.
- These smooth, impervious layers act as an additional barrier to moisture, guarding against surface water contact and preventing delamination.
Chemical and Mold Resistance
- PVC is naturally resistant to mold, rot, and most chemicals found in household and outdoor environments.
- No swelling, warping, or biological degradation even in continuously damp or humid conditions.
Suitability for Wet Environments
- Ideal for bathroom cladding, shower panels, kitchen backsplashes, and exterior signage.
- Can be pressure-washed or hosed down without damage.
Installation Considerations
- While the board itself is waterproof, seams, joints, and cut edges should be sealed (e.g., with PVC-compatible sealant) to maintain a fully watertight installation.
- Edge-banding or perimeter trim prevents capillary action along cut surfaces.
Conclusion:
PVC foam board’s closed-cell core and impermeable skin layers make it effectively waterproof, with negligible water absorption and excellent resistance to moisture, mold, and chemicals. When properly sealed at joints and edges, it performs reliably in both interior wet areas and exterior applications.
PVC foam board—especially co-extruded grades with solid skins—is bendable under the right conditions. Here’s what you need to know:
Cold Bending (Without Heat)
- Thin sheets (≤ 3 mm) can be gently curved around large radii (typically ≥ 1.5 m) without cracking.
- Thicker panels (> 5 mm) are generally too stiff for cold bending and risk snapping or springing back.
Heat Bending (Thermoforming)
- Apply gentle, even heat to the bend area using a strip heater, heat gun, or oven set between 60–80 °C.
- Once the PVC reaches its glass transition range (~70–80 °C), it becomes pliable.
- Bend slowly around a form or jig to the desired radius, then hold in place until cool (≈ 1–2 minutes).
Bending Radius Guidelines
- Minimum recommended inside radii depend on thickness:
• 3 mm board → ≥ 50 mm radius
• 5 mm board → ≥ 100 mm radius
• 10 mm board → ≥ 200 mm radius - Tighter radii may cause surface dimpling or skin delamination.
- Minimum recommended inside radii depend on thickness:
Grooving for Sharp Bends
- For bend angles > 90° without heating, machine shallow grooves on the inner face.
- Groove depth ≈ 2/3 of board thickness; groove spacing ~10–15 mm.
- This concentrates bending at the cut lines, reducing stress on skins and core.
Best Practices & Risks
- Always heat evenly—overheating (> 90 °C) can discolor or burn PVC, and release HCl fumes.
- Support the board during cooling to avoid spring-back.
- Test a scrap piece to confirm temperature and radius before working on final parts.
Conclusion:
With controlled heating, appropriate radius guidelines, or strategic grooving, PVC foam board can be bent cleanly into curves and angles—expanding its versatility for architectural panels, custom displays, and creative installations.
